Lesson Two - Right / Left Hand Balance

In lesson two we are going to look at strengthening both hands. A lot of music can have changes in patterns that requires both hands to be able to play different patterns at the same time and in many cases changes to those patterns without a break in the timing. What generally happens is the "weaker" hand cannot keep up. I find this exercise can also be helpful to see how both hands work in conjunction when learning to improvise.

Again I have left out the bass drum in a) through d). Start out using a quarter note pulse on all four beats.
Practice tips:
- Use a metronome - start slow and increase the tempo gradually.
- Play each pattern individually.
- Play pattern a) for four measures and switch to pattern b) four measures without stopping, repeat the process until it flows naturally. (Do this same step for patterns c) and d))
- Once you become comfortable with these basic patterns change the bass drum patterns and snare drum patterns to create your own exercises.
