Lesson One - Accents in Groove

In our first lesson we will explore the use of accents in a groove to create a more dynamic sound and feel. We are going to look at the concept by using a simple rock pattern but please keep in mind that this can be applied to any style.

In numbers 2 through 10 I have left out the HH pattern to make reading the accents easier, use the same eighth note pattern for all the exercises or try using different cymbal patterns.
Practice tips:
- Use a metronome - start slow and increase the tempo gradually.
- Only play the accent on the specific drum noted. (a common mistake is to accent the HH at the same time you are accenting one of the drums.)
- Play at a volume level where you can hear the accents. Don't overplay the accents, remember that an accent should only be slightly louder than the rest of the notes. One common mistake drummers make is to play at one volume level LOUD!... Playing as loud as you can no one will ever hear the difference between an accented note and an unaccented one.
- After mastering this concept on the snare and bass drum try applying accent patterns to the HH or Ride cymbal while playing the snare and bass accents.
