CD Review

Brain Gilmore, freelance writer, Jazz Times, after attending a recent performance and upon listening to the advance copy of ‘Jazz Speak Live’…

“I absolutely love the CD especially "Pannonica." I haven't quite heard an interpretation of Monk done so well, and so unique. Obviously, the absence of Monk's instrument adds a certain richness and other worldliness to the song that hasn't been explored this way before. The emotional content is perfect; it doesn't try to do too much Monk, it rests within its own sphere, pushes at the margins but remains content to lay back.  I also love the Wayne Shorter tune that opens the album as well. I think overall the selection of songs to perform was excellent. I think most of all the bossa nova feel to the album adds a dimension that is unique. This is good too. Jazz is so cluttered with acts that sound alike. Jazz Speak doesn't have to worry about that. Their voice is its own space, their sound is fresh, clear and beautiful.”
